Is a cylindrical lithium battery better, or a Square lithium battery?
2nd Sep 2025
The shape design of lithium batteries (cylindrical, square, button shaped, etc.) is a comprehensive reflection of their performance, manufacturing process, and application scenarios. The reason why cylindrical and square lithium batteries have become mainstream is that they each have advantages in terms of technological maturity, manufacturing processes, performance, and application scenarios.
(1) High technological maturity
- Cylindrical battery: Cylindrical batteries (such as 18650) are the earliest type of lithium battery to achieve large-scale commercialization, with mature production technology, high degree of automation, and good consistency.
- Square battery: Square batteries are widely used in the field of consumer electronics, such as mobile phones and laptops. The manufacturing process has been optimized for many years and the technology is mature.
(2) Simple manufacturing process
- Cylindrical battery: The winding electrode process is simple, suitable for large-scale production, and the metal shell is easy to process.
- Square battery: The stacking or winding electrode process is flexible, and the shell is made of metal material, with a stable structure.
(3) Excellent performance
- Cylindrical battery: high mechanical strength, good heat dissipation performance, suitable for high-power applications.
- Square battery: High space utilization, high energy density, suitable for compact devices.
(4)Widely applicable scenarios
- Cylindrical batteries: widely used in fields such as electric vehicles, power tools, energy storage systems, etc.
- Square batteries play an important role in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and other fields.
